Karl Kruuda Rally Poland preview

Karl Kruuda warmed up for his latest World Rally Championship adventure with a successful test in Poland yesterday (Sunday).

The WRC 2 title contender and co-driver Martin Järveoja were acclimatising to their Peugeot 208T16, which they’ll be using in competition for the third time on the 71st Rally Poland from June 25-29.

“We found a good set-up and the feeling in the car was definitely better than Sardinia even though the road was in quite a bad condition at the end,” said Kruuda, who finished fourth last time out in WRC 2. “The test wasn’t about kilometres, it was more about the car. Before Sardinia it was about getting to know the car better but now it’s to feel what the car does in different situations, what to improve and what are the mistakes.”

Estonian Kruuda, the Rally Sweden WRC 2 winner, continued: “I did a couple of runs to get a good feeling and pushed a lot. We lost the front bumper although the roads were quite messed up by then. But the car gave me a really positive feeling for the event and we had no problems. I got into the correct pace and I don’t think we would be able to go fast this weekend without the test. I just hope it will help me to fight for the podium.”

This will be Kruuda’s second start in Poland following his debut there in 2012. While the route has altered dramatically for the 2014 edition – such as the inclusion of stages across the border in Lithuania – Kruuda has a good basis to work from.

“The roads are softer, more sandy but also more narrow compared to what we have in Estonia,” he explained. “But at least there are some similarities and that will help. As well as the new stages, I’m still learning the car of course because the learning never ends.

If I did not need to learn then I would be in a World Rally Car factory seat. But in terms of predicting a result we’ll just have to see how our speed is compared to the others when the stages start.”

Kruuda, who starts in Poland on the back of winning his class and finishing second overall on the Pohjanmaa Ralli in Finland recently, is fourth in the WRC 2 standings, 32 points behind championship leader Lorenzo Bertelli. Not only will Bertelli be skipping the Mikołajki-based event, he’s also effectively got two scoring opportunities left compared to Kruuda’s four, meaning that the title race is very much alive.

Rally Poland is based in the country’s northern lake district and returns to the WRC roster for the first time since 2009. This year’s event consists of 24 special stages over a competitive distance of 362.48 kilometres. Following shakedown on Thursday morning the opening stage gets underway at 1640 local time.
